Challenges

The early days at Ergon Consulting Group were filled with promise. However, the company faced a major hurdle when its largest client went out of business less than two years in, resulting in a 55% revenue loss. This unexpected setback forced Cary to downsize the team, marking a low point for Ergon and for Cary personally. The impact of this loss was compounded by the fact that Ergon’s toolset was riddled with inefficiency — a mixed bag of solutions that didn’t integrate with one another.

While Cary had been a dedicated Datto partner for years, he initially met the Kaseya + Datto acquisition with hesitation due to critical (albeit anonymous) Reddit commentary, which only added to his uncertainty about Ergon’s future.

In an attempt to revitalize Ergon, Cary decided to invest in marketing. However, the company’s inefficient toolset held his team back from gaining the traction they needed, and Cary started to question Ergon’s ability to survive. Solution

After months of strategic development to expand the company beyond IT sales, GoCloud’s foray into cloud services was initially met with skepticism and hiring challenges because of the nascent state of cloud technology at the time. While there was growing interest and a need for cloud solutions, adoption was slow due to lack of education, forcing GoCloud to evangelize cloud as part of their go-to-market strategy. This resulted in long sales cycles but valuable new cloud-focused customers.

Once public cloud providers became household names, GoCloud evolved their core business offerings yet again, transitioning from private to public cloud services with Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. This transition freed up resources and established a much larger prospect base for GoCloud. However, despite the company’s vision, leading tech talent and nimbleness, clunky tools and manual processes continued to hold them back. Little did Dugarte know that a burgeoning company called Kaseya would be the key to unlock the door to his bright future.

As Cambium grew, the company’s potential was stifled by a lack of a structured sales process due to the team’s expertise being all technical and no sales. Underwood hired numerous salespeople in hopes of resolving this challenge, but without a well-defined sales framework in place, the company couldn’t get the lift-off they needed for achieving their full potential.
